between us

The set is simple. A full-length mirror, a table, a projector and a projection screen, and a human with a story. Envisioned as a private concert and party, “between us” follows my journey through gender as a cyclical process which visualizes a “coming out” journey as a “coming in(to)” or a coming home. “between us” is a 90 minute solo theatre piece that tells the story of playwright Tatyana Emery’s discovery and definition of their Queer, nonbinary identity.

While it is intended to be presented as a traditional theatre piece on a stage, the piece is intended to feel more like an intimate gathering with chairs for the audience but also rugs and cushions and clothes scattered all over the floor.

This is a performance, yes, but it is also a poem and a pop-up storybook that opens into the closet of the trans artist. Messy, colorful, full of wonder and memories and memorials for all the possibilities of people you have yet to become.
